Kumasi is my favorite town

Taylor Chang on Jul 27th 2008

Kumasi is my favorite town in Ghana, well so far. The Hasta Hotel is great, very accomodating, and the soccer game we attended today was so much fun. The people just seem a lot friendlier here, or maybe it’s just my perception. Today has marked the ten day mark in which we are going to leave Ghana and return home. We are leaving Kumasi tomorrow and heading to Mole, a new adventure.

Before Kumasi, we had our homestays and I stayed with Lauren. We stayed with Jemimah and her daughter Lauretta, both extremely nice people. We had a wonderful time there because the food and company was great. During the day we worked at a local school helping to build a volunteer house. Personally, I didn’t really enjoy the manual labor aspect of our work project, but at the end I was officially glad to say that I had actually helped build a building with my two bare hands. I don’t think I will be saying that again any time soon.

Ghana has been good to me, but I’m looking forward to returning back to Sacramento. My thoughts as the trip is coming to a close: wonderful people, silly friends, fabulous.

Taylor Chang’s second blog

Cape Coast yesterday and today have been two more days added on to my adventure here in Ghana. I am sitting in this small internet cafe a couple steps away from the Savoy Hotel thinking about what my friends and family are doing back in Sacramento.

To recap, Brennu Beach yesterday was awesome. The view was astounding with the ideal waves, palm trees, and sand. The food has been great with mostly reasonable prices and inviting flavors. Today the canopy walk met and exceeded my expectations. Just looking down at least 100 ft at trees, trees, and more trees really was exciting for me. I was scared though, I’ll admit it. But the experience was worth it and I’m planning on conquering the other 5 canopy walks our tour guide said that are around the world in different places.

Here are my first impressions:

Taylor Chang on Jul 14th 2008

The complete rush of heat and humidity as I stepped off the plane. Ghana has paved roads and people drive on the same side of the street as we do. Tons of people waiting right outside the airport for family and friends with relaxed yet curious faces. The rickety, diesel-smelling SYTO bus that took us to the Pink Hostel, our home away from home for the next week or so. Different yet arousing smells.

So far I’ve been exhausted every night after a full day’s activities. Everything we have been doing from going to the beach to visiting the Dubois center to touring Accra, has been amazing and eye opening. Even though we have been here for about a week, I feel like I could spend a month in Accra itself because there is so much more to do and to see. Everyone is exceedingly friendly and helpful especially our SYTO guide Charles and our bus driver Nathaniel. We had a great time with them at the Bojo Beach today.

I’m ready to hit the road tomorrow to see Cape Coast, the slave dungeons, and a new and unexplored part of Ghana. Currently, I am very content with my journey because I have learned lots of little tidbits about the people on my trip and they all keep me energized and excited.
